The back porch of the house has always been a major living space for the house during warmer weather. Even on the hottest days the prevailing SE breezes flow past cooling foliage and right through the porch. Even on the hottest days, the porch is always comfortable. With a view south to the fields and the lane, and north to the waterfront on Ridout Creek, the porch was often used to entertain. I remember grilling steaks and eating fresh sweet corn, giant tomatoes, squash, and other farm-grown delicacies. After dinner my father would often pull out his accordion (and many times I fetched my bass fiddle) and music ran late into the night. The old porch was tired. Rotted and leaky. Time to update and improve.
