The Old Shop
Home Up The Barn The New Barn The Old Shop The Athenaeum

Late March, 2000

Here's yet another Circle R Enterprises Project!

The old burned portion of the old shop has to go. It's been there, as is, for more than 40 years.  The building has been used continuously as the farm shop, but no improvements have ever been made.

It was built in the 1920s as the dairy processing building.  A caretaker's apartment was added in the 40s.  Then it partially burned in 1956; the rest was used as a shop up until this repair work began.

First thing, the rotted back half was removed by force.  (That's a chain hooked to a 4 X 4).
The old portion was demolished in short order.
The Circle R crew removed the debris.  Many dumpsters.
Once in a while, at the end of the day, the Circle R crew rests briefly.
Then the reconstruction begins on the old foundations.
The old rotted section is quickly reframed.
The front of the old block building was stripped of its old material and new windows and doors fitted.
The old original overhang, and replacements for the porch braces, were installed.
Meanwhile, the rotted out portion was tied into the old roofline and the interior floor was raised to a usable and consistent height.
The original flavor of the building is maintained, but the structure is now greatly improved.
Next, rough cut 5/4 siding is added, and a new green metal roof to match the new barn.  Battens will be added shortly.

The old belt-driven drill press, which was on the front of the building, will be remounted on the front soon.
